Five best Takachiho tourist landmarks for a girls’ trip!

Here, we’ll be introducing you to the best, most photogenic Takachiho sightseeing spots for a fun and stylish girls’ trip, whether it be with your friends or your mother/daughter.

From extraordinary sceneries to power spots, here are the five best sightseeing spots in Takachiho Town for a girls’ trip.

Take in the abundant greenery of the mythological valley known as Takachiho Gorge

The most iconic and popular of the Takachiho Town tourist landmarks, Takachiho Gorge is chock-full of great photo spots and delicious food.

The waterfall viewing platform on the promenade offers a spectacular view of Manai Falls, with its 17-meter drop. You can also get on a boat and get right up close to the waterfall.

There’s also the Happy Yellow Postbox. Buy a postcard and some stamps at the stand next to it, and send a letter with your feelings, whatever they may be, are sure to strike a chord.

One of the great things about sightseeing is getting food on-the-go. For that, we recommend the yaki-dango (grilled Japanese dumplings). The chewy dango grilled over the charcoal, together with the sweet and savory sauce, is absolutely delectable.

Pray for your love life & deepening bonds at the historic Takachiho Shrine

Takachiho Shrine is the soja (head shrine where the gods of the region are grouped together) of the 88 Takachiho Shrines, and is the first place you should visit when you come to Takachiho.

The shrine is located in the center of town. However, pass through the torii gate and you’ll find yourself in a space surrounded by large trees, with a soothing, refreshing atmosphere.

The Meoto Sugi (Husband and Wife Cedars), which can be found on the grounds of Takachiho Shrine, is a popular power spot when it comes to fateful events. It’s said to bring fulfillment to your romantic life, and deepen your bonds with friends and family.

In addition to the Meoto Sugi, there are many more power spots on the grounds of Takachiho Shrine, including an 800-year old sacred tree and a power stone.

We encourage you to visit them all to receive their blessings.

Visit the greatest Takachiho power spot, Ama-no-Yasukawara

Ama-no-Yasukawara is where countless gods gathered to hold a meeting in the Ama-no-Iwato myth, one of Japan’s most famous myths.

To get there, walk the promenade along the Iwato River. Breathe in the crisp, clean air, and take in the soothing murmuring of the river, and rustling of the leaves around you.

While the entire walk to Ama-no-Yasukawara is a famous power spot, the most powerful spot is said to be the arched bridge you encounter on the path.

Stand at the center of the bridge and feel the energy for yourself.

It is said that if you make a wish while stacking rocks at the Ama-no-Yasukawara, your wish will come true. The stacks of rocks, lined up one next to the other, is a mystical sight.

Take in the spectacular scenery on an discontinued railway line with the Amaterasu Railway

The Grand Super Cart, which runs on the tracks for the former Takachiho Railway, has come into the spotlight in recent years as a great way to take in the extraordinary scenery of the Takachiho area.

Every element of the experience is retro-cute, from the small station building to the tickets themselves, and you’ll find yourself giddy with excitement before you even set out.

A popular photo spot is this track here, which has gotten a lot of attention on social media for letting people take photos on actual train tracks.

And that’s not even to mention the spectacular view! The train cart will stop on the Takachiho Railway Bridge, at a height of about 105 meters, so that you can take in the view. The bubbles floating around as a part of the performance make this experience even more whimsical.

Revel in nostalgia in the tunnel storehouse, Tonneru-no-Eki

Tonneru-no-Eki, located on the way from Takachiho Town to Takamori Town in Kumamoto Prefecture, is an incredible, lesser-known photo spot that has even been visited by a popular cosplayer.

The tunnel storehouse, which was built within an unfinished tunnel originally dug out for the Trans-Kyushu Limited Express, has a very nostalgic feel to it.

There’s also a shop selling shochu aged in the tunnel storehouse, amongst various other products. It’s a great place to buy souvenirs, with shochu and liqueurs you can only get there.

If you want to explore further, the premises of the Tonneru-no-Eki are also home to a blue train, a display of a steam locomotive and the Tenson Korin Falls among others.
