Seven best souvenirs for bringing the Takachiho cuisine back home with you

Did you ever taste something while on vacation thinking, “If only I could take this back home with me?”

Well, you actually can—if you buy souvenirs, that is!

Here, we will introduce you to seven of the best souvenirs you can buy, that will let you take some of Takachiho home with you.

Chicken Nanban sweet vinegar sauce, turn your home into a restaurant!

Buy the actual sweet vinegar sauce (530 yen) used in the very popular Chicken nanban dish (Japanese fried chicken with tartar sauce) at restaurants like Tomoemaru Shokudo and Izakaya Tomoemaru!

Just add the sauce to battered, fried chicken, to make the famous Miyazaki Prefecture Chicken nanban dish at home.

Granola with buckwheat seed and barley cereal, for everyday breakfast and snacking

“Buckwheat Seed and Barley Cereal Granola” (864 yen) by popular soba shop, Otaniya.

This granola is served at restaurants and accommodations around Takachiho Town. This particular product is a version of Otaniya’s popular “Barley Cereal Granola” with buckwheat seeds and various nuts, and is perfect for breakfast or as a snack.

Premium Takachiho beef miso sauce that goes perfectly with rice

The “Premium Takachiho Beef Miso Sauce” (1,080 yen), like the granola, is made by Otaniya.

Otaniya offers many varieties of miso sauce. Our favorite being this Takachiho beef miso sauce, which is made, as the name indicates – with Takachiho beef. When placed on warm rice, the miso melts and soaks into the rice, with the tender chunks of beef remaining on top.

With this sauce in hand, you won’t be able to stop yourself from getting a second or third helping of rice.

Rich tomato sauce that is extremely versatile

The “Rich, Three-Day Simmered Tomato Sauce” (600 yen) used in the pizza at Farmer’s Café Kaze-no-Michi.

This tomato sauce, which is made by simmering ripe tomatoes grown in the Kamiiwato area of Takachiho, is—as the name suggests—incredibly rich. It works great as a sauce for pizza, but can also be used in lots of other ways, for instance as a pasta sauce, or as a sauce for sautéed meat or fish.

Ultra-spicy yuzu kosho, with its almost addictive spiciness

Another Takachiho product you can buy is the “Yuzu Kosho” (600 yen), a fermented yuzu citrus chili paste, that comes with the pizza at Farmer’s Café Kaze-no-Michi as an alternative to Tabasco.

The yuzu kosho is commonly seen in grocery stores as a greenish paste. However, this Takachiho yuzu kosho is made from chopped yellow yuzu citrus, with a distinct, exquisite flavor and spiciness. It is great to use as a spice, but can also be eaten on its own alongside some Japanese sake.

Takachiho coffee, only available in Takachiho

Take the coffee at Amaterasu no Kakure Café, located near Amano-Iwato Shrine, home with you.

The original Amaterasu no Kakure Café blend, “TAKACHIHO COFFEE” (980 yen), is available to buy at the souvenir shop attached to the cafe.

Takachiho is famous for its kamairicha (kettle-fired tea). But if you’re a coffee person, this is what we recommend. Try grinding the beans yourself at home in order to maximize the fragrance of the beans.

Honeycomb that can be eaten whole

There are lots of shops in Takachiho Town that sell honey harvested in the area. Our recommendation is simply the “Honeycomb” (600 yen).

This product is a 100%, unmistakable Takachiho honeycomb, full of ripe honey that has been carved directly from the hive. Cut into the honeycomb with a knife and the honey flows out, irresistibly smooth.

Eat the honeycomb as is, or pair it with bread or yogurt. Buy the way, did you know it is great product for health and beauty?

Conclusion

These were seven of the best Takachiho souvenirs for bringing the Takachiho cuisine back home with you. What do you think?

We encourage you to eat lots of delicious food in Takachiho, and take some of the ones you liked the best back home with you. Either to enjoy yourself or for your family, for a bit of Takachiho cuisine at home.

The products introduced here are available at Michi-no-Eki Takachiho, Kihachi-no-Kura, as well as the various cafés and restaurants mentioned.
