Six best local specialty soft-serves you can enjoy while on-the-go

One of the joys of traveling in Japan is the local specialty soft-serves you can get while on-the-go at your travel destinations.

Takachiho may be famous for its many tourist landmarks, but it is also a treasure trove of delicious food ingredients. Here, we’ll be introducing you to the local specialty soft-serves you can enjoy while going around the sights in Takachiho.

The “Wa (Japanese) Soft-Serve”, the most popular and photogenic

The stylish Amaterasu-no-Kakure Terrace, which is very popular on social media, the is located about midway between Ama-no-Iwato Shrine and Ama-no-Yasukawara along Prefectural Road No. 7.

Of the over 40 types of desserts they offer, the most popular is the “Wa (Japanese) Soft-Serve” (和ソフト).

It consists of a matcha green tea soft-serve topped with sesame dumplings and sweet red bean paste, and is as photogenic as it is delicious.

“Rich Honey Soft-Serve” made with lots of locally-harvested honey

Souvenir Shop Ama-no-Yasukawara, located near the entrance to the Ama-no-Yasukawara Promenade, offers desserts and drinks made with local ingredients.

We recommend the “Rich Honey Soft-Serve” (濃厚はちみつソフトクリーム), which is topped with lots of rich, syrupy honey harvested in the local Iwato area.

“Apple Mango Soft-Serve”, a Miyazaki Prefecture specialty

Michi-no-Eki, which translates to “Roadside Stations”, are a veritable treasure trove of local food ingredients. Michi-no-Eki Takachiho, located alongside National Route 218, near the Shinto Takachiho Ohashi Bridge, is no exception.

Miyazaki Prefecture is known for its mangos. So it’s no surprise that our recommendation for Michi-no-Eki Takachiho is the “Apple Mango Soft-Serve.”

We encourage you to pop in and grab one for your drive.

“KIHACHI Soft-Serve with Honeycomb”, only available at Kihachi-no-Kura

Kihachi-no-Kura is a products museum located in central Takachiho Town that sells many local specialty products. They also offer desserts made with local ingredients.

We recommend the “KIHACHI Soft-Serve”, which is made with milk from Miyazaki Prefecture, with a honeycomb topping.

“Takachiho Gorge Specialty Matcha Green Tea Soft-Serve”, at the most popular Takachiho landmark

The Takachiho Tourist Association’s direct-sales shop is located near Takachiho Gorge and the Manai Falls, the most popular tourist landmark in Takachiho, in an area lined with fishing ponds and restaurants.

We recommend getting the “Takachiho Gorge Soft-Serve” (高千穂峡ソフト) in the matcha green tea flavor. Take in the greenery and savor the matcha green tea soft-serve in the famous tea-production town of Takachiho.

“Mixed Soft-Serve”, for a luxurious double of Miyazaki flavors

Kobirudokoro, located near the Takachiho Gorge Freshwater Fish Aquarium, is a perfect spot to get some food on-the-go. “Kobiru” in the Takachiho dialect means snacks.

We recommend the “Mixed Soft-Serve,” a luxurious soft-serve that includes both the Miyazaki specialties of hyuganatsu citrus and mango.
