When mentioning Takachiho, the first image that pops into your mind is probably one of the Takachiho gorge, with the boats and Manai falls – beautiful right?
Well as you might know, the Takachiho gorge suffered major damage during a typhoon in September 2022. Massive rain and rapid flooding led to devastating damage on the popular promenade in the gorge. Since the incident Takachiho Town has work relentlessly to restore the area. On March 15th 2024 the promenade was finally reopened!
Here we will give you a tour of the long awaited beautiful promenade, that now can be experienced in Takachiho town!
The results from the typhoon no.14 in 2022 where disastrous, with railing being washed away and even the pathway itself ruined. In 2023 an other typhoon came in and delayed the restoration work.
But now, the promenade is open once again! Let us have a look!
Starting off next to the Manai falls, following the promenade.
This is a recommended photo spot for taking pictures of the falls. With the boats in the water the pictures become more lively and no one of them will look the same!
Here the promenade was cut off due to the construction work while repairing the promenade. Curious to see how it looks on the other side?
A stunning open rocky area with refreshing air and a new promenade. Seeing how well it is constructed and how new the asfalt is, it feels really special to stroll down on it, taking in the views and breathing the refreshing air.
In order to prevent any future similar destructions, the promenade has actually been built even higher and wider then before.
Here you will find famous sites such as “Nanatsuga pond”, as well as the legendary “Kihachi-no-Chikara-Ishi”, a 200-ton rock said to have been hurled by the legendary god Kihachi during a battle.
Round the corner you will find an older part, with benches and rocks covered with moss. The air feels more mysterious here as well!
The yellow path marks the promenade on the map. Starting by the Manai falls, you can follow the path all the way passed Araragi parking lot and up to Ohashi parking lot.
This promenade is actually part of Kyushu nature trail, but due to the typhoon, large parts of the trail are still unaccessible and therefore closed off.
One more photo spot, this bridge called “Yaritobibashi” is a great place for photos! This as you can take pictures from so many photogenic angles making it fun to see how they turn out.
The finish line, the “Shinbashi” bridge at Araragi.
The stone bridge itself is very cool and photogenic, but let us not forget the amazing view bellow. The oddly shaped rocks and the emerald colored water never seize to mesmerize.

Conclusion
Are you excited to visiting the reopened promenade?
It is finally open again, and built sturdy to last against harsh weather, as well as wider to welcome more visitors to enjoy this beautiful and mythological spot.
The walk from side to side takes about 30 minutes in a leisure pace.
If you travel by car, there are three parking lots spread over the area. This meaning you might experience the path reversed depending on which directions you came from. Either way, the walk is so nice it is a pleasure to walk back the same way, seeing everything from a different angle – and depending on the time of the day, a new light.
